Payments for wounded soldiers: how much can be received for rehabilitation
Wounded Ukrainian service members are entitled to financial support during treatment and rehabilitation. This includes not only their regular military pay, but also additional compensation granted for the period spent in hospital or on medical leave. Under certain conditions, this additional payment can reach up to 100,000 hryvnias. Frontliner explains how this system works and what injured soldiers can expect after being wounded.
In addition to this, soldiers continue to receive their base military pay, including salary, rank allowances and seniority bonuses. Even during treatment, they remain active service members and retain entitlement to these payments. The minimum level of such pay exceeds 20,000 hryvnias per month (or $450), though the actual amount depends on position and additional allowances.
Duration of payments during treatment
Payments are provided throughout the treatment period but follow specific rules. In most cases, they are automatically granted for the first four months of hospitalization.
If treatment continues beyond that period, further payments require reassessment by a military medical commission. This body determines whether the service member needs continued rehabilitation. In total, payments may be extended for up to 12 months of uninterrupted treatment.
After discharge from hospital, the additional 100,000 hryvnia payment is maintained only if the service member is officially granted medical leave due to a severe injury. If the injury is not classified as severe, the additional payment may stop after inpatient treatment ends.
Additional payments available
Financial support for wounded soldiers is not limited to treatment-related payments. Ukrainian legislation предусматривает several types of assistance depending on health condition and medical assessments.
First, the state guarantees continuation of regular military pay. Second, additional financial aid may be provided, including payments for recovery or to address social and бытові needs. These payments can equal a monthly salary and are issued upon submission of a formal request.
Separate one-time payments are available if a disability or significant loss of working capacity is established as a result of injury. The amount depends on the severity of the condition and can be substantial, as defined by law.
What soldiers should do to secure payments
- Ensure the injury is officially recorded by the military unit and in medical documents.
- Obtain documentation detailing the circumstances of the injury and undergo a military medical commission.
- Submit a formal report (request) to the commanding officer for the allocation of payments.
- Keep copies of all medical records and commission conclusions.
- In case of delays, contact the unit’s financial department or the hotline of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
The state has committed to providing financial support to wounded service members during treatment and rehabilitation. In practice, however, much depends on bureaucratic procedures and the effectiveness of medical commissions.
For this reason, it is crucial for soldiers and their families to understand their rights and ensure that all entitled payments are properly processed.
